ASIAN MYTHS: DEBUNKING MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT WORKING WITH ASIA

For decades, “The East” and “The West” have been creatively intertwined in the world of animation. From the early days of outsourcing with Hanna-Barbera and FIL Cartoons, to today’s landscape of co-productions, co-development, and cross-border partnerships, the industry has evolved into a dynamic, global tapestry of collaboration.

HERE WE ARE!
HERE WE ARE!

East/West animation alliances first took root in 2D-strongholds like South Korea and the Philippines, then expanded to CG powerhouses such as India and China. Now, as studios, clients, and audiences alike demand more refined, boutique-level quality, partnerships are branching out into rising animation hubs like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Pakistan - nations brimming with top-tier talent waiting to be discovered.

💡 Fun fact:  We’re proud to say Thailand - our home base - is one of those places. And we’re not shy about our bias!

But as more Asian studios make their mark on the global animation scene, some outdated myths still malinger. While we can’t speak for every  studio across Asia (nor would we try), we can  confidently clear up a few misconceptions - especially about working with us here at Chardo Animation.

MYTH 1: “You Get What You Give”

The assumption:

Asian studios will only do exactly what they’re told—no more, no less. That’s why pre-production materials have to be airtight, or the results will be subpar.

The reality:

While clear briefs are always a good idea, we don’t operate on autopilot. If something’s unclear, we’ll raise our hands, ask the right questions, and suggest creative and practical solutions. Animation is a collaborative process, and we’re here to be an extension of your team.

It’s impossible to anticipate every creative hiccup. That’s why we act as a second set of eyes (and brains) to keep your project on track and looking great.

MYTH 2: “Asians Just Have Different Tastes in Humor”

The assumption:

What’s funny to a Western audience might fall flat in the East, so Asian animators may not land the timing or nuance of a good punchline.

The reality:

FALSE! Thai humor is witty, layered, and often cerebral. (Just search “funny Thai commercials” for a taste.)  As a long-standing crossroads of trade and tourism, Thailand has absorbed cultural influences from across the globe - North America, Europe, Japan, and beyond.

Your jokes are safe with us. We get 'em - and we know how to deliver the timing just right.

MYTH 3: “Just Say Yes to Everything”

The assumption:

Cultural norms around “saving face” make it hard for Asian partners to say “no” or raise concerns, which can lead to surprises or delays down the road.

The reality:

While politeness is deeply ingrained in Thai culture, it doesn’t come at the expense of professionalism. If something’s going to impact a deadline or compromise the quality of the work, we speak up.

Whether it’s good news or tough conversations, we believe in transparency (see our other post on exactly this subject! - because that’s how great shows get made.

MYTH 4: “Brainwork in the West, Heavy Lifting in the East”

The assumption:

Creative direction should stay in the West, while Asia handles the production grunt work.

The reality:

Creative talent knows no borders. Thailand is home to a new wave of visionary storytellers, concept artists, designers, and directors. We don’t just execute ideas—we help shape them.

While economic conditions may vary, the capacity for world-class creative leadership absotively, posilutley does NOT.

The Bottom Line

We get it - reading about how great we are, written by ourselves, on our own blog might not be totally convincing. But the best way to know if we’re the right fit? Try us!

Call us. Let’s make something awesome together.
